Taxi in Japan

Transportation

Finding a taxi

You can hail a taxi on the street, go to a taxi stand at major stations or hotels, or use a taxi-hailing app like GO or Uber.
A red light in the windshield 「空車」 means the taxi is available.
In Japan, even if you take a taxi from the street, you won’t be overcharged.

Taxi-hailing apps are not widely used, but they are available.

Entering the taxi

The rear door opens automatically—no need to touch it.
Greet the driver and state your destination. Showing the address on your phone or a map can be helpful.

Payment Options

Fares are metered and shown on the screen.
You can pay with cash, credit cards, IC cards (Suica, PASMO), or some mobile payment apps.
Sometimes, taxis only accept cash. Taxis that accept credit cards have logos of card brands like VISA displayed on the window.
No tipping is required in Japan.

Exiting the taxi

The driver will open the rear door automatically when you arrive.
Take your belongings and thank the driver with a simple “Arigato gozaimasu” before leaving.
