Zojoji Temple

Spots

Zojoji Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located near Tokyo Tower, offering a striking contrast between tradition and modernity. Founded in 1393, it served as the family temple of the Tokugawa shogunate. The main gate, Sangedatsumon, is an original structure from 1622 and one of Tokyo’s oldest wooden buildings.
The temple grounds are peaceful and spacious, with seasonal flowers and a cemetery where several Tokugawa shoguns are buried. Zojoji is also known for its rows of Jizo statues, dressed in red hats and bibs, dedicated to children. It’s a serene spot for reflection, with stunning views of Tokyo Tower rising behind the temple.
